We all know the classic yuletide carol, Twelve Days of Christmas. But did you know the song is believed to reference important articles of the Christian faith? Each gift represents a hidden meaning to the teachings of faith or a virtue, such as peace, love and kindness. To honor the true meaning of the Twelve Days of Christmas, we’ve decided to celebrate Twelve Months of Christmas to expand on these interpretations. Each month we will highlight one of these gifts with a special service project or suggestions on how to practice using them throughout the year.

By exercising these qualities in our daily lives they will develop and grow, therefore influencing those around us in a positive way. Our goal is to live the meaning of Christmas year round.

JANUARY: SELF CONTROL

The beginning of the new year is all about starting fresh, making resolutions, and laying the ground work for the rest of the year to come. Self Control is a virtue not about helping others, not directly anyway, but about helping ourselves by:
•    Making healthy choices
•    Treating others with respect
•    Taking time to nurture ourselves and play
•    Thinking positive thoughts
•    Focusing on what will bring you happiness and success

Self Control represents one of nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit, represented by the “nine ladies dancing” in the original Twelve Days of Christmas. The other eight include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness and gentleness. We’ll highlight these virtues and more throughout the year, so please join us in celebrating the Spirit of Christmas. We’ll post updates on service project in your area on our website, Facebook and Twitter pages, so stay tuned for more from Santa’s Twelve Months of Christmas!
